Rainy Day Indoor Activities for Auckland Kids
Auckland averages around 1,240 mm of rain per year — meaning rainy weekends are a regular part of family life. The good news? The city has an excellent range of indoor options. Here’s where to go when the forecast shows rain.
🏛️ Museums & Interactive Attractions
Auckland War Memorial Museum
Free for residentsAuckland residents get free entry with proof of address. The Natural History galleries and the Māori Court are genuinely fascinating for school-age kids. The volcano science exhibit is interactive and popular with the under-tens. Allow 2–3 hours. The café on Level 1 is decent for lunch. Located in the Domain — parking can be limited, so take a bus if possible.
📍 The Domain, Parnell
Motat (Museum of Transport and Technology)
Paid entryMotat is a hands-on dream for curious kids. Vintage aircraft, trams, and interactive engineering exhibits keep children occupied for hours. The tram ride between the two sites is a highlight. Much of the collection is under cover, making it a solid rainy day choice. Family passes offer good value. Kids under 4 are free.
📍 Great North Road, Western Springs
Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium
Paid entryThe moving walkway through the shark and stingray tank is an unmissable Auckland experience. The penguin colony is a huge hit with toddlers and young children. Book online in advance — it’s significantly cheaper than walk-in. Fully indoor and heated. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Free parking on site.
📍 Tamaki Drive, Mission Bay
🛝 Indoor Play Centres
Timezone (Auckland Central & Westfield)
For ages 5 and up, Timezone offers arcade games, laser tag, and redemption prizes. Located inside Westfield shopping centres, making it convenient to combine with lunch. Load a card with credits — cheaper in bulk. Good for short bursts of energy release on wet days.
Chipmunks Playland (multiple locations)
Chipmunks has dedicated toddler zones alongside larger play structures for older kids — a rare find that works well for families with mixed ages. Locations across Auckland including Henderson, Manukau, and Takanini. Entry fees are reasonable and adults get coffee while kids run themselves tired.
Jump (Trampoline Parks)
Locations in Albany and Takanini cater to school-age kids with trampoline arenas, foam pits, and dodgeball courts. Ages 5+ get the most out of it. Book a session online as peak times sell out. Non-slip socks are required and available for purchase onsite.
