What Central Auckland is like with kids
Central Auckland is the answer when the forecast is bad. Nowhere else in the city has this many things to do under a roof — the Museum, the Art Gallery, MOTAT, the Maritime Museum, Stardome and Kelly Tarlton's are all within a short drive of each other, and two of the biggest are free or koha-based for Auckland residents. If you have one wet Saturday and no plan, this is where to point the car.
The other half of central is outdoors and costs nothing. The Domain, Cornwall Park and Western Springs are proper city parks with lambs, ducks and room to run, and the waterfront between Silo Park and Wynyard Quarter has free water play and climbing structures with container ships going past. Mission Bay adds a swimmable beach ten minutes from the city.

Getting there and parking
Central is the easiest part of Auckland to do without a car. Trains and buses converge on the city, the Link buses loop past most of the museums, and the waterfront spots are walkable from Britomart with a pushchair. If you do drive, the Domain has free parking and everything else is paid — the museums sit on the edge of the paid zone, so it is worth checking rates before you circle. Weekend traffic into the city is lighter than weekday, but events at the stadium change that quickly.
Worth knowing before you go
- Auckland Museum is free for Auckland residents — bring something with your address on it — and Auckland Art Gallery's collection is free for everyone. Both run family activities on weekends and in the school holidays.
- The Wynyard Quarter water play is genuinely wet, not a splash pad. Pack a full change of clothes and a towel even if you were only planning to walk past.
- Cornwall Park has lambs in spring and working farm paddocks year-round, and it is free. It is the easiest place in the city to fill two hours with nothing booked.
- Museum visits go better in the morning. By early afternoon the Discovery centres and hands-on rooms are at their busiest and the queues for the volcano show get long.
- Before a swim at Mission Bay or any inner-harbour beach, check safeswim.org.nz — water quality can drop for a day or two after heavy rain.
