West Auckland is wild and green — the Waitākere Ranges, black-sand surf beaches, kauri walks and family aquatic centres. These are the best west-side spots for a weekend with kids.

What West is like with kids
West Auckland is the wild side, and it needs a bit more planning than the rest of the city. Piha, Muriwai and Bethells are black-sand surf beaches on the open Tasman — spectacular, and not the place to let a toddler wander to the water's edge. They suit school-age children who can be told to stay between the flags. Families with babies and preschoolers are better served by Laingholm, a calm harbour beach on the sheltered side with grass and shade.
Inland, the Waitākere Ranges are the reason people move out west. Cascade Kauri has waterfalls, clear streams and kauri trees that were standing centuries before Auckland existed. Arataki Visitor Centre is the sensible first stop: carved pou, a short bush loop, big views, and rangers who know which tracks are open.

Getting there and parking
Everything west of Titirangi is a winding drive, and the road out to Piha and Bethells is narrow with no shoulder and no phone coverage in patches. Allow more time than the map suggests, especially with a car full of children. There is no supermarket at the surf beaches — the Piha store covers the basics and not much more, so pack lunch and water before you leave town. Parking at Piha and Muriwai fills by mid-morning on a hot weekend and there is no overflow to speak of.
Worth knowing before you go
- Only swim between the flags at Piha, Muriwai and Bethells, and only when the beach is patrolled. These are rip-current beaches with a long rescue history — the flags are not a formality.
- Kauri dieback closes tracks in the Waitākere Ranges, and which ones are open changes. Check before you drive out, stay on the boardwalk, and use the cleaning stations at both ends of every track.
- Laingholm is the west-side option for under-fives — sheltered harbour water, grass, shade and no surf. It is a completely different kind of beach day from Piha.
- Muriwai's gannet colony is busiest and best from spring through summer. The lookouts are fenced and pushchair-friendly, so it works even with a baby along.
