South, Auckland

South Auckland has the Botanic Gardens, regional parks, thermal pools and big play centres — plenty of affordable family fun. Here are our picks for a great day out down south.

Covering Manukau, Papakura, Botanic Gardens, Ambury, Totara Park and nearby. 10 of the spots in this area cost nothing to visit.

What South is like with kids

South Auckland is the best-value part of the city for families, and it is consistently underrated. The Botanic Gardens are free, have a dedicated children's garden and playground, and can absorb an entire afternoon. Ambury is a working farm on the harbour edge where kids can get close to cows, sheep and chickens without paying an entry fee. Council pools down south are among the cheapest in Auckland.

It is also where you go for the big-ticket days out. Rainbow's End is New Zealand's largest theme park and Butterfly Creek pairs a tropical butterfly house with crocodiles and a small railway. Between those two extremes sit the Hunua Ranges — waterfalls, forest tracks and swimming holes about an hour from the city centre.

Getting there and parking

The southern motorway carries most of the traffic in and out, and it is the one route where a weekday-afternoon departure will cost you badly. Weekend mornings are clear. The Botanic Gardens, Ambury and Totara Park all have free on-site parking with room to spare, which is not true of most family destinations closer to town. Rainbow's End sits beside the motorway at Manukau with its own car park, and the train station is a short walk away.

Worth knowing before you go

  • Ambury is a working farm, not a petting zoo. Lambing and calving are the best times to visit, and the animals are moved between paddocks, so what you see changes week to week.
  • The Botanic Gardens are free to enter and free to park, and the children's garden has its own toilets and shade. It is the single easiest cheap day out in the south.
  • The swimming hole below Hunua Falls is not patrolled and conditions vary with rainfall. Stick to the picnic area and the marked tracks with younger children.
  • Rainbow's End is a full day and priced accordingly. Kidz Kingdom is the section for under-sevens — check what your child is tall enough to ride before you buy.
