Free Things to Do with Kids in Auckland

Family outings add up fast. The good news: Auckland has a genuinely impressive range of free activities — and we mean free entry, not “free if you spend $30 in the café.” Here’s the real list.

🏛️ Free Museums & Galleries

Auckland War Memorial Museum

🆓 Free

Free for Auckland residents with proof of address. World-class Māori taonga collection, natural history, and volcano science displays. Allow 2–3 hours.

📍 The Domain, Parnell

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki

🆓 Free

Free permanent collection including New Zealand and Pacific art. Family activity sheets available at the entrance. Located in the city centre.

📍 Corner Kitchener & Wellesley St, CBD

New Zealand Maritime Museum (harbour access)

🆓 Free

Entry to the wharf-side viewing area and some exhibits is free. The indoor galleries require a ticket, but the outdoor access alone is a great harbour experience for kids.

📍 Viaduct Harbour, CBD

🌿 Free Parks & Nature

Auckland Botanic Gardens

🆓 Free

Completely free, all day. 64 hectares of themed gardens with a children's garden, sensory garden, and picnic areas. Flat sealed paths throughout — perfect for strollers and bikes. Café onsite.

📍 Hill Road, Manurewa

Ambury Regional Farm Park

🆓 Free

A working farm with free access. Kids can see sheep, pigs, chickens, and goats up close. The Manukau Harbour views are beautiful. Walking tracks through paddocks. Toilets onsite.

📍 Ambury Road, Māngere

Waitākere Ranges walks (short tracks)

🆓 Free

Many short tracks in the Waitākere Ranges are free and beginner-friendly. The Fairy Falls walk (2.5 km return) is manageable for ages 5+ and ends at a picturesque waterfall.

📍 Scenic Drive, Waitākere

🎭 Free Community Events

Auckland Libraries — Story Time & Wriggle Rhyme

🆓 Free

Free weekly sessions for under-fives at branches across the city. Check the Auckland Libraries events calendar. No booking required at most branches.

📍 Various branches citywide

Farmers Markets (free entry)

🆓 Free

Markets at Matakana, La Cigale (Parnell), and Takapuna are free to enter. Kids enjoy the food, live music, and atmosphere. Great Saturday morning activity.

📍 Various — Sat & Sun mornings

Auckland Council Community Events

🆓 Free

Check the Auckland Council events calendar for free concerts, school holiday programmes, and cultural festivals throughout the year. Many are family-targeted and no cost.

🏖️ Free Beaches & Water

Takapuna Beach

🆓 Free

One of Auckland's most popular beaches with calm, shallow water safe for young children at low tide. Rockpools to explore. Cafés a short walk away on Hurstmere Road.

📍 Takapuna, North Shore

Mission Bay & Kohimarama

🆓 Free

Calm harbour beaches with flat grassy reserves behind them. Safe for paddling. Ice cream shops and cafés line the waterfront. Easy to combine with a walk along the promenade.

📍 Tamaki Drive, Eastern Bays

Piha Beach (supervised seasons)

🆓 Free

A stunning black sand beach on the West Coast — dramatic but respect the surf (swim between the flags). Spectacular scenery even for a coastal walk. Surf lifesaving patrols in summer.

📍 Piha, West Auckland
